First Thanksgiving in NYC!

change by warhol

"When people are ready to, they change. They never do it before then, and sometimes they die before they get around to it. You can't make them change if they don't want to, just like when they do want to, you can't stop them."

shall we?

Can we?
Shall we?
One day
very soon
let us
go away
together
just you and me
Can we?
Shall we?
Call in sick
one day
and travel to the Sea
and hold hands
all day
Can we?
Shall we?
Eat our sandwiches on the train
get drunk on fresh air
and come home tired
And never tell anyone... Ever!

city evolution

Since I am a grad student now I guess I should move to a more serious kind of posts, but I really don´t feel like doing it. I have enough seriousness at school.
I was scared at first that coming back to Chicago would be a remake of the first time, but (fortunately) it is not (except for the fact that tonight I am attending a party organized by the Spanish armada II).
I´d rather not talk about the homeless situation I lived for two weeks or all the extremely annoying and weird things that kept happening to me regularly like having two useless fingers and fainting alone in my studio when it happened (vampire but still scared of blood); or finding my pj´s on the floor outside in the corridor ¿? at 1am... etc.
I am trying to use the very short amount of spare time I have to discover little changes of the city. Some things stay just the same like the empty bottle or the jazz festival. Some have closed like filter or gourmond. And some others have reopened like pingpong or ginos. There are lots of new buildings, specially in the loop and south loop. But what I need the most is a change in the way of living the city. That is, discovering new spots or performances that I completely ignored the first time.

One of them is the Chicago Art District. There is a late night open house (free drinks included) every 2nd Friday at every gallery in the district. I definitely recommend it.

And the second one so far is the Chicago Farmers Market. There are different locations for each day but I recommend the one right next to my place @ Clark St. It´s a green market where you can find all kinds of fresh vegetables, fruits and flowers. It is a shame that due to the weather it only lasts until October...

"Will you still care?
Will you be there?
In my trials
and my tribulations
Through our doubts
and frustrations
In my violence
In my turbulence
Through my fear
and my confessions
In my anguish
and my pain
Through my joy
and my sorrow
In the promise of another tomorrow
I'll never let you part
for you're always in my heart."

D-day

"... It is an event that has long brought to this coast both heads of state and grateful citizens; veterans and their loved ones; the liberated and their liberators. It has been written about and spoken of and depicted in countless books and films and speeches. And long after our time on this Earth has passed, one word will still bring forth the pride and awe of men and women who will never meet the heroes who sit before us: D-Day.

Why is this? Of all the battles in all the wars across the span of human history, why does this day hold such a revered place in our memory? What is it about the struggle that took place on these sands behind me that brings us back here to remember year after year after year?

...

Nazi ideology sought to subjugate, humiliate, and exterminate. It perpetrated murder on a massive scale, fueled by a hatred of those who were deemed different and therefore inferior. It was evil.

The nations and leaders that joined together to defeat Hitler's Reich were not perfect. We had made our share of mistakes, and had not always agreed with one another on every issue. But whatever God we prayed to, whatever our differences, we knew that the evil we faced had to be stopped. Citizens of all faiths and no faith came to believe that we could not remain as bystanders to the savage perpetration of death and destruction..."

Sara dice... ¡no lo sé!
Ella es un aleteo
nacido de mi manar,
un esqueje de mi árbol
sin entender este hablar.
Sara crecerá en el tiempo
meciéndose toda entera
como un ensueño divino
entre una blanca espinera.
Un Abril,
cuando las flores se vayan
en un átomo de luz
sobre una estela dorada,
Sara escuchará mi voz
en la palmera que hablaba."

City of Glass

"And then, most important of all: to remember who I am. To remember who I am supposed to be. I do not think this is a game. On the other hand nothing is clear. For example: who are you? And if you think you know, why do you keep lying about it? I have no answer. All I can say is this: listen to me. My name is Paul Auster. That is not my real name."

¨ You’re so indie rock it’s almost an art...
You’re so sad maybe you should buy a happy meal
You’re so skinny you should really Super Size the deal
Secretly you’re so amused
That nobody understands you¨

white bike

It was in Mykonos when I first saw a whole white bike randomly locked near the port and clearly useless. I thought it was some cute piece of street art. Then I found another one in the East Village in NYC, and became suspicious. But I was definitely intrigued last week, when I saw several of them in different spots of London. They made me feel sad and happy at the same time, so I decided to research when I got home.
The cute white bikes are cold "ghost bikes". This is, memorials for bikers that passed away in an accident in that spot. I don´t like memorials but I must say that this is a not morbid but beautiful figure to not forget.

slumdog millionaire

Jai Ho!

In order to celebrate The Oscar Night, we went to Angel (Islington) to watch Revolutionary Road. All I can say is that Kate was amazing, I wish she had won it for this movie. She definitely deserves it though, I can´t say the same about Cruz...

the reader

First movie in London, and it was a bad one... I do not see the point of making a whole movie about a woman that didn´t know how to read while keeping the whole nazi an pedophile profile into the background...

cruel intentions

I forgot how much I liked this movie. It is a shame that he had to die before she got her just dessert.

Sebastian: You spend all your time preaching about waiting for love. Well here it is. Right in front of you, and you're going to turn your back on it. So I guess we're just f*****. I'll move on. But you are going to have to live the rest of your life knowing that you've turned your back on love. And that makes you a hypocrite. Have a nice life.
---
Kathryn: You were very much in love with her. And you're still in love with her. But it amused me to make you ashamed of it. You gave up on the first person you ever loved because I threatened your reputation. Don't you get it? You're just a toy, Sebastian. A little toy I like to play with. And now you've completely blown it with her. I think it's the saddest thing I've ever heard.

look right, stay left

On my first day in London, I am starting to summarize little things I´ve learned about living in the UK or just the city itself.
  • Porridge: very energetic breakfast made boiling oaks in milk.
  • Even though you might think it is a Brita, it is not. Apparently every kitchen needs an electric kettle.
  • As we all know, British people are (although not politically) left sided about their motion and so are their faucets. So when you wash your face the right side gets cold and the left one gets hot.
  • There is one switch for every single plug or electric tool in the house.
  • There is no way to dry your hair in the bathroom, unless your hairdryer works with batteries.
  • British cats don´t enjoy cuddles.
  • There are products with ¨weight watchers¨ points, and apparently I cannot eat more than 19 (points) a day!
  • My favourite Banksy´s graffiti is at Blackfriars bridge.
  • Car lanes are zigzagged.
  • Boys spend a lot of money on haircuts (sometimes so" impossible" looking that are hard to describe).
  • Oyster is a public transport card.
  • Camden tea sellers are ageophobic.
  • Only two clues are needed to switch from American accent to British accent: 1)pronounce every vowel with an o in it; 2) don´t forget to pronounce the t.

El curioso caso de Benjamin Button

¨For what it's worth: it's never too late or, in my case, too early to be whoever you want to be. There's no time limit, stop whenever you want. You can change or stay the same, there are no rules to this thing. We can make the best or the worst of it. I hope you make the best of it. And I hope you see things that startle you. I hope you feel things you never felt before. I hope you meet people with a different point of view. I hope you live a life you're proud of. If you find that you're not, I hope you have the strength to start all over again. ¨

Meryl Streep está increíble! Oscar más que merecido, espero.

new moon

¨ 'So let´s both just be hopeful, all right?' I suggested. 'Not that it matters. If you stay, I don´t need heaven.' ¨

¨ 'Now and then I see something in her eyes, and I wonder if I´ve ever grasped how much pain she is really in. It´s not normal, Alice, and it... it frightens me. Not normal at all. Not like someone... left her, but like someone died.' His voice cracked. It was like someone had died- like I had died. Because it had been more than just losing the truest of loves, as if that were not enough to kill anyone. It was also losing a whole future, a whole family- the whole life that I had chosen... Charlie went on in a hopeless tone. 'I don´t know if she ´s going to get over it- I am not sure if it´s in her nature to heal from something like this. She´s always been such a constant little thing. She doesn´t get passed things, change her mind.' ¨

¨I was like a lost moon- my planet destroyed in some cataclysmic disaster-movie scenario of desolation- that continued, nevertheless, to circle in a tight little orbit around empty space left behind, ignoring the laws of gravity.¨

¨Instead of moving, I thought about Juliet some more.
I wondered what she would have done if Romeo had left her, not because he was banished, but because he lost interest? What if Rosalind had given him the time of day, and he´d changed his mind? What if instead of marrying Juliet, he´d just disappeared?
I thought I knew what Juliet would feel.
She wouldn´t go back to her old life, not really. She wouldn´t ever have moved on, I was sure of that . Even if she´d lived until she was old and gray, every time she closed her eyes, it would have been Romeo´s face she saw behind her lids. She would have accepted that, eventually.¨

¨That would be just like me- ruin everything, destroy the world, in a moment of klutziness.¨

¨But I felt his lips press silently against my forehead, and I didn´t care what the motivation was. At least I could be with him before I died. That was better than a long life.¨

¨I thought I´d explained it clearly before. Bella, I can´t leave in a world where you don´t exist.¨

¨Before you, Bella, my life was like a moonless night. very dark, but there were stars- points of light and reason... And then you shot across my sky like a meteor. Suddenly everything was on fire; there was brilliancy, there was beauty. When you were gone, when the meteor had fallen over the horizon, everything went black. Nothing had changed, but my eyes were blinded by the light. I couldn't see the stars anymore. And there was no more reason for anything.¨

¨ 'I don´t trust myself to be... enough. To deserve you. There is nothing about me that could hold you. '
`Your hold is permanent and unbreakable' he whispered. 'Never doubt that' ¨

...and I´ll never laugh again at the uselessness of the plane´s emergency instructions for landing on the water!

twilight

I was well aware that my league and his league were spheres that did not touch.

¨Aren´t you hungry? ¨he asked, distracted.
¨No¨ I didn´t feel like mentioning that my stomach was already full- of butterflies.

About three things I was absolutely positive.
First, Edward was a vampire.
Second, there was a part of him- and I didn´t know how dominant that part might be- that thirsted for my blood.
And third, I was unconditionally and irrevocably in love with him.

¨I love you,¨ I whispered.
¨You are my life now,¨ he answered simply.

¨Afraid of a needle¨ he muttered to himself under his breath, shaking his head. ¨Oh, a sadistic vampire , intent on torturing her to death, sure, no problem, she runs off to meet him. An IV on the other hand...¨

Stephenie Meyer

I loved it! I know it is a teenage book, but it was just like living the first love again... The conversations between them reminded me of myself (when she was trying not to hyperventilate...). As well as how naturally she deals with their bizzare differences...
