About winners and losers. Those are two concepts that have been flying above my head lately. How is a winner like and who is a loser? And then I though of what C. told me sometime ago, "Good people always win in the end". So my conclusion (that will probably change a thousand times in the future) is that the hint is at the very last part of the sentence: "in the end". At the moment that they (good p) feel like failures it won't be very obvius because like she said to me, it might not be right away, but there is some point when they win (poetic justice again...). Also they will only realice then 'cause winning was probably the opposite of what they thought it was.
But winning what?, something material like a car? something untouchable like a degree? something unpossessable like a person? I think that winning is just a feeling, not a fact. So the other hint is that winners do not see a challenge as a competition with other people (even when they are competing) but with her/himself and her/his own limits, creativity or intelligence. That is what makes you a genuine and unique person, not just a winner.
The movie says a lot about that, and about alternative ways to become what you want to be. And how important relatioships with your family are, no matter how screwed the members are at the moment. It is really cute how the grandpa and Olive are so close and it is impressive how they (except her father) let the girl be herself no mater what, but always showing reality to her as honest and cruel as it is sometimes.
-grandpa?
-yeah?
-am I pretty?
_Olive, you are the most beautiful girl in the whole world.
-you are just saying that.
-no, I am not. I am madly in love with you, not because of your brains or your personality. It is because you are beautiful, inside and out.
-grandpa?
-what?
-I don't wanna be a loser.
-you are not a loser. where'd you get the idea you are a loser?
-because daddy hates losers.
-back up a minute. You know what a loser is? A real loser is somebody that is so afraid of not winning, they don't even try.Now you're trying, right?
-yeah.
-then you are not a loser. we're gonna have fun tomorrow, right?
-yeah.
-we can tell'em all to go to hell. good night sweetie, I love you.
